How to get ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini to write your gift wish list
ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini can write your gift wish list if it already knows you. Use the assistant you talk to most, let it use its memory and your past chats, and give it a prompt that asks for specific gifts with a reason for each. Prompt & Present supplies that prompt and turns the reply into a shareable list.
Which assistant should I use?
The one you have used the most. Months of ordinary conversation matter more than the brand: an assistant that has helped you plan trips, fix things and choose what to buy has far more to go on than one you opened last week.
Two settings help. Turn on memory and access to past chats where your assistant offers them, so it can use what you have already told it. And if it offers a thinking setting, we suggest using it for this, though it cannot make up for missing information about you.
Where are the memory settings?
Each assistant names them differently, and they change, so its own help page is the place to check. As of November 4, 2026:
- ChatGPT: Settings, then Personalization, then Memory. See Memory in ChatGPT.
- Claude: in Settings, turn on memory and the option to search past chats. Searching past chats needs a paid plan. See Claude's chat search and memory.
- Gemini: memory of past chats needs a personal Google account with Keep Activity turned on. See Gemini's memory of past chats.
What if my assistant doesn't know much about me?
With little to go on, your assistant will suggest fewer useful gifts. The prompt asks for twelve or more ideas, and a list needs at least three before we can build it. If the reply says it cannot see anything about you, check its memory and past-chat settings, or switch to the assistant you use more, and run the prompt again.
You can also point it in the right direction. The first questions on Prompt & Present let you tick the kinds of gifts to focus on and add anything else in your own words, and your assistant is told to look for what it knows about each one.
What does the prompt ask my assistant to do?
- Look through what it remembers for what you do, what you own, what you have said you wanted and what you have planned.
- Leave out health, money worries and other personal difficulties, and never explain a gift by them.
- Write each idea as a short gift description: what the gift is for, what it must and must not be, and one sentence a friend can read.
- Rank the ideas and say which facts each one rests on.
- Not guess your sizes, and not look up products or prices. Finding the products is our part.
How do I do it, step by step?
- On Prompt & Present, answer a few questions: a price range, the kinds of gifts to focus on or avoid, and a name for your list if you want one.
- Copy the prompt. You can read it first; it is long, and it tells your assistant what to leave out.
- Open ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, paste the prompt into a new chat and send it. If it asks you a question, answer it.
- It finishes by printing your gift descriptions in one block with a copy button. Copy the whole block.
- Come back and paste the block. Coming back in a different browser is fine.
- We match your assistant's ideas to products on Amazon and build your page of up to ten gifts. That takes about a minute. How Prompt & Present works explains the matching.
What goes wrong most often?
- Pasting the prompt back. The thing to paste is your assistant's reply, not the prompt you copied. It happens. The site spots a full copy of the prompt and says so.
- Copying only part of the reply. Wait until your assistant has finished, then use the copy button on the block so you get all of it.
- The assistant stops to ask something. Answer it in the same chat and it carries on to the gift descriptions.
- The assistant cannot see what it knows about you. The reply may say so, or come back very short. Check the memory and past-chat settings and run the prompt again.
Can I change the list afterward?
Yes. You can remove gifts, swap up to three for your assistant's next ideas, and remake the whole list. What's on a Prompt & Present gift list, and what can I change? has the detail.
Does my assistant's memory get sent to Prompt & Present?
We cannot see your assistant's memory or your account. What reaches us is the block you paste, and we keep all of it. Each idea in it carries a line or two of evidence, such as something you said you wanted. We use those lines to choose the right product and keep them with your list as your own record. The people you share the list with never see them; they see the product, what it is for, and one sentence on why it suits you. The privacy page lists everything we keep.
