Christmas gifts for Dad: ten picks by the kind of dad he is (2026)

The right gift for Dad depends on which dad he is. Here are ten picks, one each for the griller, the fixer, the new dad and seven more, with who each one suits, when to skip it and what to check first. We chose them from 28 gift guides, forum threads and three AI assistants.

The griller MEATER Pro wireless meat thermometer

A probe that stays in the meat and sends its temperature to an app, which says when to take it off the heat and how long to rest it. The maker rates it for open flame, so it can stay in while he sears.

  • Choose it if he grills or smokes most weekends and enjoys a gadget.
  • Skip it if he cooks by feel, or does not want his phone at the grill.
  • Check first: it needs the MEATER app, and it reaches his phone over Bluetooth with no Wi-Fi of its own. If he cooks two cuts at once, look at the two-probe Pro Duo.

ChatGPT and Gemini both named it. Oprah Daily suggested another MEATER, the SE, for the same dad.

The fixer Leatherman Wave Plus multi-tool

A full-size multi-tool with pliers, two knives, scissors, files and a bit driver. The blades open with one hand and lock in place.

  • Choose it if he is the one people hand things to when they break.
  • Skip it if he already carries a full-size multi-tool, or only ever wants a pocket knife.
  • Check first: Leatherman now sells the sheath separately, so see what the listing includes. This one is stainless steel; there is also a black version.

An owner in a Leatherman thread on Reddit says he was given one and likes it. ChatGPT and Claude each named a different Leatherman.

The dad who loves the coffee ritual Bialetti Moka Express, 6-cup

The classic Italian stovetop pot. It makes small, strong, espresso-style coffee and gives him something to fuss over on a slow morning.

  • Choose it if he likes making coffee as much as drinking it.
  • Skip it if he wants a full mug at the press of a button.
  • Check first: it will not work on an induction stove without Bialetti's adapter plate. "Six cups" means six espresso-size servings, about one large mug in all. It is rinsed by hand, never put in the dishwasher.

Suggested by British GQ.

The new dad Manta PRO Sleep Mask

A blackout mask with soft cups that sit around his eyes, not on them, and thin sides for sleeping on one side. It blocks daylight for a dad sleeping in shifts.

  • Choose it if he is grabbing sleep whenever the baby allows.
  • Skip it if he cannot stand anything on his face at night.
  • Check first: nothing to size, since the strap and the eye cups adjust. It can be machine washed in cold water.

Suggested by British GQ.

The dad who fixes his own car BlueDriver Pro Next-Gen OBD2 scanner

A small plug for the port under the dashboard that sends trouble codes, live readings and repair suggestions to an app on his phone. The maker says there are no subscriptions.

  • Choose it if he would rather know what a warning light means before a shop tells him.
  • Skip it if he leaves the car to a mechanic, or drives a fully electric car.
  • Check first: put his car's year, make and model through BlueDriver's compatibility checker. The deeper readings depend on the car.

Suggested by WIRED, which says it tests its picks.

The weekend athlete Theragun Mini, 3rd generation

Therabody's smallest massage gun, with three heads, three speeds, a travel lock and a soft case. It is small enough to live in a gym bag or a desk drawer.

  • Choose it if he runs, lifts or plays weekend sports and feels it the next day.
  • Skip it if he already has a massage gun, or has a medical condition where this kind of massage is not advised.
  • Check first: that the listing says 3rd generation. Older Minis are still sold.

ChatGPT and Claude both named it. BestReviews suggested another Theragun, the Relief.

The dad who says he wants nothing Ember Mug 3, 10 oz

A heated mug that holds coffee at the temperature he picks, set on the mug itself, with a lid and a charging coaster in the box. It suits the dad who wants nothing because it improves something he already does every day.

  • Choose it if his coffee goes cold on the desk every morning.
  • Skip it if he drinks it in ten minutes, or takes a travel mug out the door.
  • Check first: that the listing says Mug 3. The earlier Mug 2 may still be on sale and must be washed by hand; the maker says Mug 3 can go on the top rack of the dishwasher.

TechRadar suggested the earlier Ember Mug 2, and its writer, given one for Father's Day, says he uses it almost every working day.

The hiker Darn Tough Hiker Micro Crew socks

Cushioned merino wool socks that sit just above a boot, knitted in Vermont. Darn Tough's guarantee is unusual: "Unconditionally Guaranteed for Life."

  • Choose it if he hikes, or wears boots all winter.
  • Skip it if he never wears boots.
  • Check first: his shoe size. They come in five sizes, so choose the right one on Amazon's page, and include a gift receipt.

Outdoors Magic suggested a different Darn Tough sock, the Fastpack Micro Crew.

The bird watcher Birdfy Feeder 2 smart bird feeder

A bird feeder with a camera that sends clips and alerts to a phone app when a bird visits. Birdfy says naming the species is free on its feeders from November 2026.

  • Choose it if he is home a lot and already watches the yard.
  • Skip it if the spot for the feeder is out of reach of the home Wi-Fi.
  • Check first: Wi-Fi reach to where it will hang, and which version the listing shows. Only some come with a solar panel.

Named by ChatGPT. Claude named a rival smart feeder for the same dad.

The reader Amazon Kindle Paperwhite, 16 GB

An e-reader with a 7-inch glare-free screen that, by Amazon's description, runs for weeks on a charge.

  • Choose it if he reads most nights, or packs three books for a trip.
  • Skip it if he reads on paper by choice, or already has a recent Kindle.
  • Check first: which Kindle he has now, and that the listing is the newest model. Amazon sells more than one Paperwhite at a time.

ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini all named a Kindle Paperwhite. Two chose the Signature Edition.

Where ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini agreed

On November 4, 2026 we asked ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini the same question, each in a fresh chat with memory off: which ten gifts would you recommend for a dad, each for a different kind of dad?

Of the thirty suggestions, one gift was on all three lists in some form: a Kindle Paperwhite, with two naming the Signature Edition. Two named the MEATER Pro and two the Theragun Mini. They agreed far more on the kind of dad than on the product.

Kind of dadWhat they suggested
The grillerA meat thermometer (all three; two chose the MEATER Pro)
The readerA Kindle Paperwhite (all three)
The fixerA multi-tool or a pocket tool set (all three, three different products)
The bird watcherA smart bird feeder (two) or binoculars (one)
The backyard hostA Solo Stove fire pit (two, in different sizes)
The builderA large LEGO set (two, different sets)
The coffee dadA kettle (one) and a grinder (one)

Golf, gaming, astronomy and running each appeared on one list only. We used the three lists as one source among many, and several of their suggestions are not among our ten.

What dads in forum threads say they use

In the forum threads we read, some of them years old, the gifts dads reported still using were everyday things matched to a hobby or a job: a good pen, a rotary tool, a folding cart. Clothes were the gifts that went back. That is why each pick above starts from something he already does, and why the only socks here are for a dad who hikes.

Not sure which dad he is?

Ask him. A list he makes himself beats anyone's guess, and it still leaves you choosing what to buy. How to ask someone what they want for Christmas without spoiling the surprise has words you can borrow, and the button below sends him a link to make his own list.
